1. Causes of the Russian Revolution of 1917

The Russian Revolution of 1917 was driven by widespread dissatisfaction with the Tsarist regime and the provisional government that followed. Key causes include:

a) Weakness of Tsar Nicholas II

• Ruled autocratically, resisting reforms and ignoring popular demands.
• Influenced by Tsarina and Rasputin, whose advice alienated the public.
• Failed to reform land ownership, political system, and army modernization.
• Poor handling of World War I led to military defeats and loss of public support.

The Union Jack

• First version (1606) : combined cross of St George (England) and cross of St Andrew (Scotland) after crowns united.
• Current version (1801) : added Irish flag following the Act of Union with Ireland.
• Welsh flag : never included in the Union Jack.
• Use : base for flags of former British colonies (Australia, New Zealand, Hawaii).
